Master’s Degree in Psychology
As a Counseling Specialist, Elizabeth James earned her Master’s degree in Psychology focusing on an integrative public health model from Norwich University. Her studies delved into the intricacies of human behavior, cognition, emotional well-being and spiritual reality of soul, interplaying within our biological systems, thoughts and perceptions always.
Bachelor's of Science focused on Neuropsychology
Elizabeth refined her skills at two different mental health clinics and as a battered woman's advocate (IOP and MH) and within her non profit for young kids who are sex trafficked. Her private practice of over two decades and academics from highly competitive universities such as Boston University led her to the understanding the brain/body/spirit is intricately working within the neurobiology but even more so in the unseen energies of light and sound in the form of vibrational electromagnetic fields: energy we all share in common. These deeper scientific insights allow her to translate what wisdom text have long since addressed. The conclusions are we operate both in symbolism, language, perceptions and the constraints of cause and effect within our physical beings to produce good health: always individual and a collective formulation unlike what most public health models propose today; one size fits all, one drug formulation and script based on age, sex and symptom alone.
Wheelock College
Elizabeth James holds an Advanced Graduate, Master’s level certification Education, in the Urban Teaching Program. This educational foundation equips her to engage with clients holistically but rationally, considering their unique learning styles and needs: she reaches a broad range of the population; especially those with learning and developmental issues such as: ADD, ADHD. The training allowed for the exceptional or Gifted Students as well. During her time within these studies Elizabeth was involved in a larger research study on racial discrimination and participated in a whole group cohort of individuals who were exposed to extremes of discrimination in learning and understands intimately both the psycho-emotional aspects of discrimination and the neurobiological impacts of losing ones voice and disempowerment to power structures.
Leslie University
Her ongoing commitment to learning includes coursework from Leslie University, where she explored innovative therapeutic approaches and how to scaffold learning. Scaffolding is where the teacher proposes a model or learning skill just beyond the current capacity of understanding of the student/client and models the "next steps" for growth, always within the reach of both their emotional capacity and intellectual ability. These challenge exercises can be done in forms of play, art and humour to make the challenge feel safe, and even open the hearts and minds of the client/student to values and beliefs they had not been familiar or acculturated to in their families of origin. This allows for release of the negative and an indwelling of spiritual understanding of their own will and their place in the world: building confidence through a healthier self esteem.
Harvard University
Learning at one of Americas "top" universities and bringing her ongoing curiosity into how the mind works, she went through coursework for a short period at Harvard in Cambridge. Here Elizabeth studied philosophy and comparative religions. This allowed Elizabeth to form the historical narratives of the collective, this to serve both a multicultural client base and discover the impacts of our objective cultural norms on shaping our values, pains, limitations, collective violence, faith beliefs and exclusion and inclusions of others as we try to grow as individuals. This experience was during the first nine months of her beautiful daughter's life in her womb. This was a uniquely special experience for her to say yes to life ! and to college together. This distinguished university is prestigious - yes, did they or does they have all the answers - never. Emptying of self and opening up to the creator she realised reaped far more wisdom, than the knowledge the world had to offer.
Mind Body Medical Institute, Harvard Medical- Beth Israel Deaconess
H. Bensen, MD brought a model of science and meditation to Boston. This clinical training in resiliency and stress management, now called SMART programs, is an evidenced based training. A patient centered care. The different techniques were for those experiencing extreme stress responses either from physical injury or mental health stress such as caused by trauma. Both mental and physical trauma alike. gaining techniques from world renowned doctors and nurses on how the brain operates within the bodies physiology under stressful circumstances. Also, what is "mindfulness", the tools of restructuring thoughts " triggers" in the brain/body and how the "stress-response translates into the body to dis-ease. Then of course, after capturing full awareness, how to reduce both the pain response or catastrophic thinking, as it impacts the body physiology and nervous system. The goal again was building resiliency for homeostasis and a lasting peace through balance and harmonizing mind-body.
A Holistic-Healthy Design Model
Counseling Specialist Elizabeth James’ private practice of over 25 years embodies an integrative, client-centered philosophy. A coaching-counseling model is the best approach to treating most mental health issues, including substance use disorders. Professional Journey
Client Centered Psycho-Educational and Psycho-Spiritual Therapy Focus
Complementary Medicines
Elizabeth’s curiosity led her both seeking the truth about our lives and our bodies being uniquely in coherence with all the living and therefore into the sciences beyond conventional therapies. She explored complementary modalities such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and mindfulness practices such as contemplative and spiritually directed prayer and one to one session in her role as a pastoral counselor; she proved highly effective due to her own journey’s desire for what is both truly alive and uniquely alive within the spirit of humanity. As well, she received training both in Divinity school for about a year and in a highly specialized healing and deliverance faith based model and scriptures which speak to Gods desire to heal and make whole his creations. These integrative approaches enhance her clients’ healing journey to whole-health.
Current Research Focus
Elizabeth has done extensive research in natural remedies, plant based, most especially for opioid users. Current cutting edge treatments are utilising a plant from the African content, Iboga, and it is administered as "Ibogain therapies." These are well-known therapies to other parts of the world as in Portugal and rehabilitative center's in South America, and is soon to be this year in Boston, MA . This remedy has been used for hundreds of years.
The Elizabeth James Wellness Model
Spiritual Foundation
Elizabeth encourages clients to draw strength from their faith. She integrates prayer, meditation, and scripture into therapy sessions. Connecting with a higher purpose provides hope and resilience.
She often shares passages like Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Mind-Body Harmony
This term falls under “self-care” in addiction therapy. The focus is on balance and truthfulness. Elizabeth recognizes the mind-body connection, specifically; the neurobiology of addiction and the impact of substances on the brain neurotransmitters “hijacking” the once holistic system into divided and conquered parts a dis-eased brain that is truly human for those suffering the cravings and debilitating results socially of this body imbalance and brain dis- ease: no more balance. This subverts all potential for the individual and she recognizes this and combines evidence-based cognitive-behavioral techniques with practices like her new art therapy contemplative meditation, “Neshama”. This literally means Soul in ancient languages a true tested meditation: she directs the Soul in essence to harmonize with first the mind so it can settle within the body once again then the body re-ordering with integrity the mind body system holistically – the emotional impact is deeply felt by the clients.
o One very beneficial impact is that this technique brings deep peace and therefore much needed sleep to all those she sees. Elizabeth promotes a constant reflection on thoughts and actions through journal keeping. This from the outside RE-trains the body thoughts to re-program the autonomic “fight or flight” physiological stress response. Added to the language re-education a body technique of controlled deep breathing combined with progressive muscle relaxation techniques all bring awareness back to the client.
o Most of all this in total brings back a sense of self-control in treatment to the client which the dis-ease robbed them of when their bodies/brains’ were hijacked by the substance use. Elizabeth reminds all it is their therapy and must be client centered to be effective and long lasting in their lives.
o Elizabeth’s sessions are a relaxing, calming and safe spaces where clients explore emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations and often long held deep spiritual experiences forgotten from childhood. Elizabeth is an educator at heart and fosters further cognitive growth or “cognitive behavioral re-structuring” from habitual mind language and thought talk that lowers self-esteem and blocks growth.
Complementary Approaches
Contemplative Meditation & Expressive Art Therapies
Elizabeth collaborates with Cravings, anxiety, and pain.
Herbal/Floral Remedies
She educates clients about natural supplements unique light vibrational systems that enhance our cellular activity in a positive manner naturally supporting balance and in some to address cellular health and emotional well-being if one suffers from depression and anxiety with their addiction; known as a comorbidity. Also working on the micro level of vibrational medicine for the emotional fields and physical neurochemical triggers.
Contemplative Prayer/Mindfulness
Guided mindfulness exercises help clients stay present and manage triggers. Those with chronic stress suffer from what is called, “catastrophic thinking”, unrealistic predicting of negative outcomes from circumstances perceived as undesirable. In the AA group model this would be better known by the term,” stinking thinking.” Which in the cycle of addiction leads all too often to negative outcomes from self-fulfilling prophecies of past behaviors that led to the addictions or disharmony within the clients’ family and other significant relationships.
Community and Support
Elizabeth emphasizes the power of community. Group therapy, church involvement, and support networks play a vital role in recovery.
She often says “We’re stronger together” “Pray for the strength to love” utilizing forgiveness for healing always.
Grace and Redemption
Elizabeth’s Christian bias infuses her work with compassion. She believes in redemption and second chances. Her favorite verse, Romans 8:1, reminds clients: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Beyond Addiction to Harmonious Living
Elizabeth’s impact extends beyond addiction treatment. She advocates for mental health awareness, hosts workshops, gives seminars in wellness, fasting and nutrition and mentors aspiring therapists. Her legacy lies in transforming lives—one prayer, one session, and one-step toward healing at a time.
IN SUMMARY
Ms. James began her own journey in a compassionate way, teaching in both a school and residential program for children with severe autism and has grown in her own journey with a vision to the future. One example of this is training and homeschooling her own daughter, now thirty, in a hybrid technological academic program. Adding to her community organizing a nonprofit for young women in performing arts WOW Women on Wellness and advocating for the most marginalized children who are being sex trafficked, PACT People Against Child Trade into being an empathetic sounding board in several mental health clinics and within the field of SUD treatment: living her faith as a servant to others.
